An upright freezer keeps frozen food in shelves and drawers where you can see it. It takes the same floor space as a fridge, so it fits a normal run of units, and capacities reach up to 280 litres. The quietest models run at 39 dB. Choose a model with automatic defrost if you do not want to defrost by hand; without it the freezer needs defrosting once the ice is more than half a centimetre thick.
