Choosing a Dishwasher

When considering the purchase of a dishwasher, the most important thing is to think about what type of machine fits your kitchen and your usage needs. Dishwashers come in various types and sizes. Different brands have different technologies that are worth exploring before making a purchase. Do you need a particularly small machine, or should the dishwasher be built into the cabinetry? Would a quiet dishwasher or one that includes a quick program be the best for you? Below you will find different features of dishwashers.

Integrated Dishwasher

An integrated dishwasher can be built into the kitchen cabinetry with a separate cover panel. This keeps the overall look of the kitchen consistent. In integrated dishwashers, the control panel and buttons are placed above the machine’s door, so they are not visible when the door is closed. Certain models reflect light or the time on the floor, indicating when the wash program is completed or its status.

Built-in Dishwasher

A built-in dishwasher, or semi-integrated dishwasher, differs from a fully integrated dishwasher in the placement of the control panel. The control panel of a built-in dishwasher is located on the front panel of the machine. A cover panel conceals the dishwasher’s front panel otherwise.

Tabletop Dishwasher

Tabletop dishwasher is perfect for small kitchens and households. It is a compact dishwasher that can be placed on a table. The capacity of a tabletop dishwasher is usually 4-6 place settings.

Dishwasher Width

The width of a dishwasher is either 45 cm or 60 cm. To choose the right dishwasher, it is important to consider what space the machine is intended to fit into and how often it will be used. Also check the size of the space reserved for the dishwasher.

60 cm Wide Dishwasher

For large households and everyday use, it’s wise to choose the widest and most spacious option available. If your household cooks a lot, the larger 60 cm wide dishwasher is the best option to fit all pots and a large number of dishes into the machine. Models include freestanding, integrated, and semi-integrated dishwashers.

45 cm Wide Dishwasher

45 cm wide dishwasher is a narrower model. It is an excellent option if available space is limited. The narrower width of the dishwasher fits perfectly in small households and kitchens.

Dishwasher Energy Efficiency

The energy efficiency of dishwashers is rated on a scale of A–G, with A being the best rating. Heating the wash water consumes the most energy during the use of a dishwasher. It is advisable to wash dishes at a low temperature or using the dishwasher's eco-wash program whenever possible. The best energy usage is achieved by running full loads.

Dishwasher Noise Level

The noise level of dishwashers typically ranges from 39 to 50 decibels. A machine with a noise level of up to 44 decibels is considered quiet. A quiet dishwasher is an excellent choice for open plan living or one-room settings where time is spent near the dishwasher while it is running. Certain dishwasher models offer a quiet wash program, which has a significantly lower noise level than the machine's specified noise level.

Cutlery Basket or Cutlery Tray in the Dishwasher?

When buying a dishwasher, consider whether you want a cutlery tray or a basket. Below, you will find the pros and cons of these two options.

Cutlery Basket

  • The basket is easy to use, and it can be removed from the machine if necessary, freeing up space for dishes.
  • When emptying the dishwasher, the basket can be lifted next to the cutlery drawer, making unloading easy.
  • The basket does not take up space for tall glasses.

Cutlery Tray

  • The cutlery tray keeps your fingers safe from sharp knife blades and forks since they are not stored upright inside the machine.
  • Cutlery can be handled more easily and more hygienically.
  • Loading and unloading are more ergonomic.
  • The cutlery tray provides more space in the lower basket.

Dishwasher Programs - How to Choose the Best Program?

In addition to basic programs, dishwashers also have other useful washing programs. Many people wash dishes using the same program all the time, but this is not advisable. By choosing the washing program according to the situation, you can save water, time, and energy. Below you will find descriptions of different washing programs, along with additional information on which program to use when.

Half Load

The half-load program allows for energy-efficient washing of a half-load of dishes.

Eco Program

The eco program is an environmentally friendly wash program that washes dishes at a lower temperature. It saves electricity and water, but takes longer than other programs. The eco program typically lasts around 3-4 hours, but it is environmentally friendly!

Automatic Program

The dishwasher's automatic program assesses the dirtiness of the dishes and adjusts the water temperature and wash time accordingly.

Quick Program

The quick program, as the name suggests, is a short wash program. This program is suitable for busy days or for washing dishes during a party. Due to the shorter wash time, the quick program uses less energy. However, it uses more water and reduces drying time. When using this program, it is advisable to use detergent that dissolves quickly.

Intensive Wash

The intensive wash is designed for dirty and greasy dishes such as pots, pans, baking trays, and cookware. The intensive wash program uses a higher temperature to clean the dirtiest dishes from stains and food residues. The intensive wash should not be used for washing delicate dishes.

Gentle Program

This program is optimal for glasses or delicate porcelain dishes. The program uses a lower temperature to ensure that delicate dishes do not crack or break.

Delayed Start

With the dishwasher's timer function, you can delay the start of the wash to a convenient time. This way, dishes will be clean at the desired time.

Functions of the Dishwasher

AquaStop Feature

Thanks to the AquaStop safety function, you can safely leave the dishwasher running overnight or while you are away from home. In the event of a leak or water damage, the AquaStop function automatically shuts off the water supply. Simultaneously, the pump drains any remaining water from the dishwasher's basin. The AquaStop function is active throughout the dishwasher's lifespan.

ComfortLift Feature

Filling and emptying the dishwasher is easy and ergonomic with the ComfortLift function. The unique air spring mechanism of the ComfortLift feature raises the lower basket of the dishwasher to an optimal height for unloading and filling. With this function, there's no need to bend while loading and unloading the dishwasher.

Dishwasher Accessories

Leak Protection – Safety Basin

Safety basin should always be installed under the dishwasher. If the dishwasher leaks, the safety basin directs the leaking water from the back of the dishwasher to the front of the machine. This allows the leak to be detected quickly and prevents large water damage. Many home insurance policies require the installation of a safety basin for reimbursement in case of damage.

Dishwasher Salt

Are there stains on your dishes or rust on your cutlery after washing? Stains are usually caused by limescale buildup in the dishwasher. Calcium carbonate leads to limescale deposits, which can accumulate in the dishwasher. Using dishwasher salt ensures optimal operation of the dishwasher as well as shiny and clean dishes and cutlery. In some locations in Finland, the groundwater is so hard that the dishwasher requires dishwasher salt to clean the dishes properly.

Cleaning the Dishwasher

Cleaning the dishwasher should be done regularly, as limescale and grease build-up can significantly reduce washing and rinsing performance. Limescale and grease that accumulate inside the machine can clog pipes, and dirt can also affect the water temperature. If the dishwasher is not cleaned regularly, it may start to smell bad. Regular cleaning of the dishwasher ensures the best washing results and clean dishes. The machine’s interior components can be easily cleaned with a detergent designed for that purpose.
