HDTV Transition 2025
Information about the HD Transition
Television channels will transition to HD broadcasting starting in Spring 2025 when Yleisradio will cease the transmission of so-called basic level SD channels, both in antenna and cable TV networks. After this, Yle's channels will only be available in high definition (HD). To watch television, a TV or set-top box with an HD tuner is required.
Also, households receiving TV broadcasts through cable networks will need a TV or set-top box with an HD tuner after the transition.
Yle's SD broadcasts will end on March 31, 2025, and the commercial channels' SD broadcasts will end on June 30, 2025.
Check out Traficom's announcement (September 11, 2024) regarding the transition.
HD Transition Timeline
November 19, 2024: HD and SD channels will swap places in the antenna network, meaning HD broadcasts will move to channel positions 1–20 and SD broadcasts will move to channel positions 21–39. New HD channels will also launch.
March 31, 2025: Yle's SD broadcasts will end.
June 30, 2025: Commercial channels' SD broadcasts will end.
Instructions for Consumers
How do I know if my TV or set-top box is HD ready?
In the channel listings, HD channels will be labeled with HD. If you receive TV broadcasts via the antenna network, HD channels can currently be found at channel positions 21-40. In cable networks, HD channels are at positions 1-20. You can check if your TV or set-top box is equipped to receive HD broadcasts by seeing if you can view the content of HD channels on your TV.
Note that after November 19, 2024, HD channels will be visible at channel positions 1-20 and SD channels at positions 21-39 due to the channel numbering change.
If you already see HD channels without any issues, you do not need to purchase a new TV or set-top box.
If you do not find HD channels in the channel listing, perform a channel scan.
Note that owning a Full HD or HD Ready television does not automatically mean that your TV can receive high definition broadcasts. These terms indicate that the resolution of the TV display is sufficient to present an HD quality image.
How can I determine whether TV broadcasts are coming to my home via antenna or cable network?
If you live in a detached house or another small dwelling with a rooftop antenna, you are likely receiving TV broadcasts via the antenna TV network. If other channels, excluding HD channels, are visible without issues, you should purchase a new HD-compatible TV or set-top box.
If you live in an apartment building or another housing cooperative, it is advisable to ask the property manager about the method of reception and confirm whether the property’s antenna system can receive HD broadcasts. The property manager is responsible for maintaining the antenna system and ensuring that HD channel packages are accessible in the housing cooperative. Therefore, if you receive broadcasts via the antenna network and your housing cooperative's antenna system is up to date but you do not see content on HD channels, you should purchase a new HD-compatible TV or set-top box.

How do I obtain the right television or set-top box?
To watch high definition programs in a cable TV network, you need a TV or set-top box with a cable network compatible HD tuner (DVB-C).
To watch high definition programs in the antenna network, you need a TV or set-top box with an antenna network-specific HD tuner (DVB-T2).
For information about suitable set-top boxes for satellite and IPTV broadcasts, consult the service provider.
Almost all new televisions sold in Finland come with an HD tuner and are usually suitable for both antenna and cable networks. The seller is obliged to inform about the features of the device.
How can I recycle my old television?
When purchasing a new television, ensure that old devices are recycled appropriately. You can return your old television to an electronics store or use official recycling points.
