- We often start with the dimensions. What kind of cooling device suits the customer, and what does he need, Sari Rissanen explains.

What to consider when buying a cooling appliance?

Cooling appliances refer to freezers, refrigerators, or combinations of these. Half of the cooling appliances sold in Finland are refrigerator-freezers with a small freezer on top or a half freezer below. Buyers of cooling appliances should consider a few things before making a purchase.

The size of the cooling appliance. How often do you shop and how many people's food needs to fit in the unit? If the household shops frequently, there needs to be more space in the refrigerator. Do you need a lot of shelves, compartments, or space for vegetables in the refrigerator? Is the freezer in heavy use year-round, and will it be constantly storing items like berries or mushrooms? For example, a freezer with shelves instead of boxes can fit more jars. In terms of size, you must also consider what space the appliance needs to fit into. Will the cooling appliance go into a designated integrated space?

The usability of the cooling appliance. Refrigerators and freezers can have additional features such as quick cooling, zero drawers, or no frost functions. No Frost technology ensures that frost does not build up in the freezer. Frost buildup can stress the cooling appliance's motor and take up space in the unit. Also, so-called zero-temperature drawers are popular. These keep a temperature of 0-+2 degrees Celsius, making them ideal for storing meat and fish.

- The quick cooling function is a specialty, but very helpful. You can activate quick cooling before going to the store so the cooling appliance is already cooler when you return. The items you pick up from the store are often warm when you get home and raise the temperature of the cooling appliance. Quick cooling keeps the refrigerator temperature at the right level, explains Euronics' category manager, Kimmo Aaltonen.

Save electricity

Replacing your cooling appliance is sensible even before a fault occurs. An old cooling appliance may leak from the seals, its motor might run too frequently, and the entire unit may be an energy guzzler.

- Refrigerators and freezers are typically used for about ten years. Cooling appliances constantly consume electricity, and the lower the energy consumption, the more you save on costs over the years, Kimmo Aaltonen notes.

It's worth monitoring the price-quality ratio of appliances in the long run. According to Aaltonen, the best-selling cooling appliance brands are Helkama, Bosch, AEG, and Electrolux.

- One thing that customers often forget to ask about is the noise level of the cooling appliance. When choosing a dishwasher, much attention is paid to noise levels, but similarly, a refrigerator or freezer can be adjacent to an open kitchen, Aaltonen explains.

Fortunately, most cooling appliances are quite silent. The quietest devices are around 34 decibels, which is equivalent to whispering, and the most common noise level in cooling appliances is 37-39 decibels.

Shopkeeper Sari Rissanen also confirms that consumption and energy ratings provoke discussion when buying a cooling appliance.

- We also discuss the device's warranty and maintenance practices with the customer.
