Cylinder Vacuums (with bag)

A bagged vacuum collects dust into a sealed bag that goes into the bin without being opened, so the dust does not return to the room air. That makes it the most hygienic choice if someone in the house has allergies. Suction also stays steadier as the bag fills than it does in a bin model. The bag is a consumable, so keep vacuum bags at home. A corded vacuum will not run out mid-clean the way a cordless stick vacuum can.

A bagged cylinder vacuum is still the most thorough way to clean a whole home in one go. Dust is collected into a sealed bag that goes into the bin unopened, so it does not return to the room air. Suction stays steady as the bag fills, and a large bag capacity means fewer changes. A corded machine will not run out of power mid-clean the way a cordless one can.

Frequently asked questions about bagged vacuum cleaners

How often should the vacuum bag be changed?

Change the bag when it is about three quarters full, or earlier if suction weakens. A full bag strains the motor and reduces filtration. In a normal home the interval runs from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on how often you clean.

Does the same bag fit every vacuum?

No. The bag type is set by the make and model of the vacuum, and a bag of the wrong size will leak or fail to seat. Check the code in the manual or on the side of the old bag before ordering.

Is a bagged vacuum better for allergy sufferers?

Usually yes. The dust stays in a sealed bag that goes into the bin unopened, so it does not return to the room air. Emptying a bin model always raises a little dust.

Why does suction weaken during use?

The most common cause is a full bag or a clogged filter. Check the hose and the nozzle for blockages as well. Suction stays steadier for longer in a bagged vacuum than in a bin model, but a full bag weakens that too.

How often are the filters changed?

The motor and exhaust filters are typically changed once a year or as the manufacturer instructs. Washable filters must dry completely before they go back in, so that no moisture is left inside the machine.
